The Importance of Getting More Than One Quote from Contractors

Filed under: Home Improvement — Tags: — admin @ 6:15 am

If you’re thinking of having work done to improve your home, then chances are (unless you’re particularly skilled at DIY) you’ll need to get a contractor in to do the work. In this instance, the usual protocol is that the contractor will visit your home, give you a quote and begin work upon the acceptance of that estimate.

Whilst many people will be tempted to just go with the first quote they get (assuming it doesn’t sound hugely expensive), you’d be far better off getting several quotes from a range of different independant contractors, as this will give you a much better idea of the real cost of the project.

You should also be aware of how thorough the contractors are during the estimating process; if they utilise dedicated pricing software and spend a lot of time gathering exact measurements, then you’ll probably find that they’re far more likely to give you an accurate and reasonable estimate.

How to Clean High Gloss Hardwood Floors

Having hardwood floors installed in your home is a great investment that will also bring you lots of enjoyment. Wood floors add comfort and beauty to any house. There are many choices in different types and colors of wood and also in the types of finish that is available. While you might purchase a pre-finished floor without thinking about the type of finish, having floors installed that give you a choice means you can select from matte, semi-glossy, glossy, or high-gloss finish.

For those people who want a floor that shines, high gloss is often the choice they make in a finish for their flooring. The majority of those with high-gloss finish over light-colored wood have been happy with the results and have no problems keeping them clean. Those who have the high-gloss finish over dark wood, however, are a different story! In addition to frequently showing spills, dust, and pet hair so that floors always seem to be dirty, they also show streaks from the cleaner that is used on them.

Since hardwood floor cleaning is an important part of the maintenance of floors, it is obvious that these problems exist on the light and dark colored wood but is just more visible on the darker wood tones. Also, if the cleaner is leaving streaks behind, it is the fault of the cleaner and not the finish on the floors!

For high-gloss finishes that might make dust and spills more apparent, you should clean hardwood floors frequently with a quality cleaner made for hardwood floors and which is appropriate on all types of finishes. The problem with light woods that may not show dirt as easily is that the dirt that is there can cause damage to the finish and cause it to loose its glossy shine.

Choose a wax-free cleaner like Bona for your floors so that you always get a deep-down clean with no streaks and use it regularly whether dirt is visible or not. To enjoy the beauty of a high-gloss finish, you must keep it free of wax and debris!

Filed under: Home Improvement — Tags: — admin @ 7:44 pm

The top reasons to owning a wood stove have a lot to do with cost savings. Wood stoves can save a great deal of money on the heating bill. With oil prices constantly on the rise, it is a good idea to find a heating alternative. The cost of wood to carry a family through the winter is exceedingly cheaper than a monthly heating bill. Some families may opt to cut their own wood, which is another way to dramatically cut heating costs.

Winter storms are known to knock out power. Families that rely on wood stoves as their main source of heat will not need to worry about staying warm during a power outage. In fact, the wood stove doubles as a cooking stove when necessary. Wood heat puts out a higher BTU and can help keep a house toasty warm even in the coldest temperatures.

Wood stoves are also great ways to cut down on the depletion of the earth’s natural resources. Wood is a renewable energy source that will not destroy the earth’s atmosphere.

Bringing in the Customers

Filed under: Home Improvement — Tags: — admin @ 3:28 pm

My uncle runs the finest fruit shop in the town, and he’s thinking about doing some renovations. Primarily, he’s thinking about getting some new more secure overhead doors installed on the pathway from his basement up to the ground level. He’s had some security problems; issues with people trying to break in to make trouble in the basement and perhaps to steal from his stock. He’s just trying to protect his own investment, and what an investment it is. He does the best business; his fruit is always plump and ripe, and it’s always at a fraction of the price of the local supermarket. I’ve been trying to lead a campaign to get him more customers, and it’s working; I’m sort of using it as a business project for school. I want to get into marketing, and I figure this is as good a way as any to start that journey. My uncle will be very proud of me someday, as proud as I am of him.

Organizing the Closet Properly

Filed under: Home Improvement — Tags: — admin @ 4:36 am

When it comes to organizing the closet there are a few steps you need to take to get it properly organized. First take everything out and purge items you no longer use. This can mean a yard sale or donate them to a local charity. These items consist of clothing that doesn’t fit or may be out of fashion. You would not wear old school get ups from the 80s unless you attend a themed party. You can perhaps spare a couple of pairs but the rest should be disposed of. There may also be out of season clothes. If it is not winter, then you can keep your winter clothes in a bin because these thick clothes can eat up plenty of wardrobe closet space. Another is also torn clothes that you may have. You have to take them out of your closet and throw them away or better yet you can utilize some of them to make them into rags. In this way you get to be earth friendly and support recycling efforts. With those items out from your closet, organizing will be easier.

My First Experience in Our Home

Filed under: Home Improvement — Tags: — admin @ 1:32 pm

I was so excited when my family moved into its first home. The backyard was spacious. Everything seemed bright and cheery. The neighborhood seemed friendly. Everything was just so clean. The yard was exuberant with fruit trees and vegetables. It all seemed a dream. I got so excited that I ran through the house and slammed into clear glass sliding door! It was so clean and clear that I did not even see it. It must have looked like something out of a comedy. I did not think it was funny then, but now that I have my own home I would like to have a window door of my own. From what I have found there are some great choices for a window door contractor. I did not even know that it was a profession! I am just glad that now I can have the same kind of house that I grew up in.

Table Saw Extensions

Filed under: Home Improvement — Tags: — admin @ 8:19 am

A table saw accessory that I consider necessary for most woodworkers is the table saw extension. Most table saws today are tailored to the small woodworker, and in those cases portability is a very important aspect. No wonder the proliferation of many different portable table saws and brands in the last 20 years, these have taken over the market and are now way more popular than the traditional table saws. One problem this has presented is the issue of working space, the great majority of compact table saws are 10 inch table saw, this will be fine for ninety nine percent of applications, but on those rare occasions where a bit more space is needed you will have to use a table saw extension. This is a very handy accessory and one I recommend a lot, so if you need more space for your woodwork you should get one of these, they are really useful.
